What a Mass Flow Meter Really Measures
Volume is a weak basis for process control. A cubic metre of gas at 1 bar is not the same amount of molecules as a cubic metre at 10 bar. Because density changes with pressure and temperature, gas measurement is the bigger win for mass flow meters. A mass meter reports kg/h or tonnes per hour. For liquids, this matters when density changes with product grade or process temperature. For gas, it matters even more.
Coriolis Mass Flow Meter: Direct Force Measurement
Here is the thing. A Coriolis meter does not need a lookup table for density compensation. It excites one or two tubes at a known frequency. Fluid enters the vibrating tube. Inlet and outlet sections move with a phase shift. That phase shift is proportional to mass flow. Separate sensor coils measure the time difference. The transmitter converts this to kg/h, density, and temperature. No moving parts are in the flow path except the tube itself.
In practice, a Coriolis meter works well for liquid fuels, edible oils, chemicals, slurries, and high pressure gases. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A paint manufacturer in Ho Chi Minh City upgraded from a turbine meter to a Silver Instruments Coriolis meter. The reason was batch repeatability. The batch mass error dropped from 1.8 percent to under 0.2 percent.
Typical turndown is better than 20 to 1. Accuracy can reach plus or minus 0.1 percent of rate for liquids. Some models handle gas flow down to 0.1 kg/h. Process connections range from DN15 to DN150. Thermal Mass Flow Meter: Heat Transfer Constants
Most engineers skip this part because thermal mass flow meters are simpler mechanically. A thermal meter uses two PT100 sensors in the gas stream. One sensor is heated. The other measures the process gas temperature. Gas molecules carry heat away from the heated sensor. The cooling rate is related to mass velocity, not volume. The transmitter uses a built in heat transfer constant for that gas or gas mixture. For air, nitrogen, natural gas, or biogas, the meter gives direct standard volumetric or mass output.
This method is common for compressed air, flare gas, stack gas, and digester gas. It is not suitable for liquids or condensing vapours. Pipe size can be DN15 to DN300. Insertion styles cover large ducts. Accuracy is about plus or minus 1 percent of full scale and plus or minus 0.5 percent of rate. Response is fast and pressure drop is low.
